Christina ColeApril 05, 2007 3:27 AMA "good Samaritan" who called 911 after stopping to help a 7-year-old girl in a hit-and-run accident last week, was actually the driver that struck her, police said.
The man, 24, was arrested on felony charges for being a habitual offender, his conduct following the accident and for filing a false accident report.
The girl was riding her toy scooter last Friday across the street from her house when she was hit by the car. Her parents had thanked the man for his help that morning, not knowing that he was the one responsible for her injury.
The girl had surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital for a broken thigh bone. She was released on Tuesday and is now at home resting and recuperating. She is expected to make it back to school next week.
The driver had spoke with officers at the scene of the accident that morning but he had not identified himself as the driver of the car involved in the accident, police said. Rather, he told investigators he was droving on a street and pulled over after seeing a crying child. He called 911 and reported it as a hit-and-run accident.
A traffic division investigator, had noted fresh damage to the drivers car along with inconsistencies in his version of what happened, authorities said.
